Partners in Crisis welcomes two new board members

Two new members have been added to the Florida Partners in Crisis Board of Directors. They are Brevard County Jail Complex Commander Susan M. Jeter and Beverly Whiteley, Ed.D., of Vero Beach. 

Jeter

A former U.S. Army combat medic, Jeter began her career with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office as a corrections officer in 1986 and advanced through the ranks to her current post. 

Recognized for her attention to the needs of inmates with mental illnesses, she was charged by Brevard Sheriff Jack Parker with developing a plan to alleviate overcrowding in the Brevard jail and provide effective mental health services for inmates. The plan resulted in a new 346-bed Mental Health/Medical Facility which opened in April 2008. 

Jeter also developed an inmate art program known as "Art Behind Bars," and has been heavily involved in Crisis Intervention Team Training for correction officers. She is active in several law enforcement-related professional organizations and serves as vice-chair of the Brevard Commission on Mental Health and Community Solutions and on the Florida Assertive Community Treatment Advisory Council. 

Whiteley is a retired university administrator and professor who has been has been active as a mental health advocate at the local and state levels for many years. The parent of an adult son who has a diagnosis of schizo-affective disorder, she currently serves on the Florida Statewide Mental Health Planning Council.

Whiteley also serves on the Board of Directors of New Horizons of the Treasure Coast, the community mental health and substance abuse agency serving a four-county area, and the Mental Health Association of Indian River County. She is also a member of the Indian River State College Lifelong Learning Institute Advisory Board and the Mental Health Collaborative of Indian River County's Housing Sub-Committee.

Although retired, she still leads informal classes at the Lifelong Learning Institute and for the Mental Health Association.
